A world-class founder who has seen the problem from every angle
We had heard about Gianni Cuozzo, Exein’s Founder and CEO, long before our first meeting. He spent years working with NATO intelligence agencies and the UN on cyber defense in active conflict zones. He then founded a red-team consultancy stress-testing Europe’s critical infrastructure. Gianni saw the same critical technical challenge from every vantage point: devices needed intelligent, real-time protection from within the kernel, yet no high-performance solution could serve all end markets with minimal overhead. So he set out to build it himself.
CTO Giovanni Falcione and CFO Gerardo Gagliardo joined early, and the team spent their first five years in deep R&D, holding themselves to an exceptionally high technical standard. When commercialization began, that patience paid off: Exein’s growth has outpaced plans over and over again.
During our first meeting with Gianni, Giovanni, and Gerardo, which turned into a four-hour Roman lunch, several things became obvious: this leadership team has incredible technical and commercial depth, has always chosen the harder, long-term-oriented path, and puts customer trust above all else. Deep technical differentiation and proprietary machine data flywheel position Exein uniquely well to secure physical AI
We at Headline have followed this space for a long time. Until Exein, there was no clear winner — because protecting devices at runtime, from the firmware level, requires four product pillars working perfectly in tandem, all technically challenging: 1) integrating deep into the Linux kernel and intercepting syscalls before any process executes to be truly preventive; 2) navigating severe hardware compute constraints and enabling high performance with ultra-low overhead; 3) deploying edge AI to dynamically predict and respond at very high accuracy in real time, especially in offline, air-gapped environments; and 4) being sector-agnostic and platform-agnostic across all Linux systems. The downside of not handling these well is simply too high, critical infrastructure depends on it.
Customer feedback shows how far ahead Exein sits across these dimensions. Its runtime agent, Photon, integrates into the Linux kernel via eBPF and prevents malicious execution before an attack can run, while competitors operate far higher in the stack. It runs with a minimal memory footprint, low power draw, and high processing efficiency. While others rely on deterministic rules, Exein uses advanced edge AI to learn how each device normally behaves to autonomously block anomalies in real time, including zero-day threats. And it works across platforms and sectors with no vendor lock-in. The market verdict was clear: Exein is substantially faster, lighter, broader, more intelligent, and more proactive than anything before it, and is particularly suited to autonomous machines.
And Exein’s proprietary machine data flywheel compounds: every deployed agent observes device behavior at the syscall level, and that anonymized telemetry flows back into Exein’s detection models, sharpening them with every device secured, and pushing autonomous, pre-emptive blocking to ever higher accuracy. The resulting dataset of trillions of syscall sequences feeds Exein’s next frontier: a foundation model designed specifically for Physical AI Security. Unlike general-purpose AI models trained largely on human-generated data, Exein’s model learns from data showing how machines actually operate. The model will power autonomous security agents that can understand and protect the systems they run on at machine speed, without waiting for human intervention.
A distribution moat that took years to build
Exein has also built deep ecosystem partnerships with the world’s leading chip designers and manufacturers, as well as ODMs and OEMs. In this industry, trust is everything: a small number of manufacturers shape the world’s supply chains, reputation travels fast and carries weight, and integration decisions last for entire production cycles. Exein spent years building and nurturing these relationships, expanding its on-the-ground presence from Rome and Germany to APAC, where much of the sector sits, and the US. These relationships compound: increasingly, some partners are moving from opt-in to opt-out, proactively embedding Exein in every new device they ship, which gives Exein tremendous leverage to scale. And when Exein sells directly to end customers, its upstream manufacturing partnerships provide a powerful edge. The result: a global, blue-chip partner base and a remarkably loyal customer base.
